History

Founded in 1880 as a railroad town, Salida quickly grew into a bustling hub for the mining and agriculture industries. The town’s historic downtown area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features well-preserved Victorian buildings, charming shops, and art galleries. Salida’s rich history is also tied to its role as a gateway to the mining camps of the Rocky Mountains.

Salida offers a variety of attractions that cater to diverse interests:

  • Heart of the Rockies Campground: Located along the Arkansas River, this campground offers riverfront sites, hookups, and easy access to outdoor activities.
  • Walmart: Allows for one day of overnightcamoing. 

Boondocking

For those seeking a more off-grid experience, numerous boondocking opportunities exist in the nearby San Isabel National Forest and BLM lands. Dispersed camping is available along forest service roads, such as Marshall Pass Road and CR 250, offering beautiful, secluded spots to park your van and enjoy the natural surroundings.
