Buena Vista Aquatic Recreational Area

Overview:

Buena Vista Aquatic Recreational Area is a good stopover for any van lifer traveling down/up the I-5 FWY.  It’s located approximately 25 miles southwest of Bakersfield and 5 miles from the I-5 freeway. The recreational area is comprised of two lakes; Lake Evans and the much larger Lake Webb.  The main activity is fishing and camping. There’s also a shooting range right next to the recreational area too.

Adventure:

The Buena Vista Aquatic Recreational Area is a good stopover for any van lifer traveling down/up the I-5 FWY. The recreational area is comprised of two lakes; Lake Webb and Evans.

Buena Vista is a good place but I wouldn’t recommend it for no more than a place to rest stop or a quick fishing trip.

Fishing

Lake Webb is an elongated shape of 873 acres available for boating, jet‐skiing, and fishing, as well as an additional 125 acres for jet‐skiing (maximum speed 45 mph).

Lake Evans which at 86 acres, is the place for the more serene pursuits of sailing, fishing, and boating at no more than 5 mph.

Camping

Projecting midway into the lake, a horseshoe‐shaped spit of land contains 112 campsites in a double row. It is a good campsite to spend the night if you are fishing or traveling through the area and need a place to stay.

Kern County Gun Club

Located adjacent to the recreational area is the Kern County Gun Club. It is a large facility with over 20 shooting stalls and operated by the Kern River Valley Gun Association (KRVGA). It is only open to the public on Sundays and Holidays.

Exploring

Paso Robles

Paso Robles is a great destination for any van lifer who loves wine, olive oil, and the beauty of vineyards. Driving around the area is breathtaking and well worth an entire day of scenic beauty. Downtown Paso Robles is a charming and quaint area that offers shopping, great restaurants, wine bars and is worth checking out

Point of Interest

James Dean Memorial

The James Dean Memorial is an interesting stopover for any van or RV lifer searching for a little history. On September 30th, 1955, James Dean died in a terrible car crash on Highway 46 (then numbered 466). The memorial is located a short distance away from the crash site is a sculpture made of concrete and stainless steel surrounding a tree outside the Cholame “post office” and Jack Ranch Cafe.
