Overview
El Porto is a wonderful beach for any van or RV nomad who wants to go surfing or lay on the beach. It’s the most consistent surf break in the south bay and is located in North Manhattan Beach. There’s a good-sized parking lot along with restrooms, showers, trash cans, volleyball courts, and a small cafe.
Adventure
A day at El Porto surfing, playing volleyball, or just being lazy is perfect for any van or RV nomad. The beach is wide and offers plenty of space for you to find a good spot to spend the day.
There is a good-sized parking lot, but it does fill up on the weekends. The parking lot is metered at $1.50 per hour.
Surfing
El Porto is one of the best beach breaks in the south bay for surfing. It is known for being a great beginner surf spot due to its forgiving waves and sandy bottom.
El Porto breaks best on a west and southwest swell around 2-4 feet. Since this is one of the best surf breaks in south bay, it is also one of the most crowded.
If you don’t know how to surf and want to learn, there are a few local surf schools (El Porto Surf School and Camp Surf ). I always recommend taking a surfing class at least once before investing in a surfboard. This will give you a better idea if the investment is worth it.
Marvin Braude Bike Path
The Marvin Braude Bike Path runs through El Porto and is a great way to explore the surrounding beaches. The bike path is 22-miles and goes south to Redondo Beach and north to Will Rogers State Beach in Santa Monica. You will see plenty of people using the bike path for running, walking, rollerblading, and even skating.
Downtown El Porto
Located a 10-minute walk from El Porto is the downtown area. The downtown area has some of the best restaurants in the south bay; my favorite is Fish Bar. There are also a few local bars that you can enjoy. I recommend visiting this area and see what it has to offer.
Manhattan Beach Pier
Located a little less than two miles south is the Manhattan Beach Pier. The pier is a great place to visit and walk around on. It is also a good surfing location. You can also visit the Roundhouse Aquarium which is located at the end.
A visit to downtown Manhattan Beach is also recommended to see a wide variety of shops and restaurants.
El Segundo Beach
North of El Porto is El Segundo Beach. A smaller and quieter beach that also has nice sand, a restroom, shower, and volleyball courts.
